On the edge of the rapids at Sault Ste. Marie, lie the old buildings, antique machinery and gentle greenery of the historic Sault Ste. Marie Canal.
There are natural areas to enjoy including picnic sites and uninterpreted nature trails. The buildings on the Canal edge,(visitor centre, powerhouse, stores, shops and superintendent's house) were constructed of local red sandstone, excavated from the lock itself. These buildings were constructed in three different styles - Neoclassical, Gothic Revival and Second Empire.
The lock proper was technologically dazzling in its day - the largest and most modern in the world in 1895. Whitefish Island to the south of the Canal, was an encampment of the native people of the area and has been declared a site of National Historic significance. Nature trails take you under the International Bridge right to the edge of the St. Mary's Rapids. In winter, cross country ski trails are groomed. The park and visitor centre is open year round with no admission fee. Tours, brochures, and audio visual shows are available.
